Yeah. So, basically, I'm getting pretty tired of going on my page and seeing the same old journal with the same old depressing crap on it, so I decided to do another "Origin of Words". Dunno how many of you guys know about this one, but if you do, bear with me and let the other ikkle youngsters learn. :'D
Anycow, off we go...!
-------
Today, I will be discussing not one, but two words. Words that many of us have heard at one point in our lives. Maybe have been refered to as such. These two words are "red neck" and "blue blood". Both of these words actually originated back in the Middle Ages, when the differences between classes was large and obvious.
"Red neck", a word that is synonymous with "hillbilly" nowadays, was a term used to describe the working class, mostly made up of farmers and knaves. They were refered to as such because when they would be out in the fields, bent over the crops they were tending, the sun would beat down on them and, you guessed it, make their necks red with sunburn. So, if you were walking through a town and you saw someone with a red neck, it'd be a sure-fire bet to say that they were a hard-working farmer or something else along those lines.
Now, "blue bloods" are a different story. Just like today when it's refered to royalty or some snobby rich kid, the term was used to describe someone who was in the upper class. Because these people were so rich and powerful, they could have other people do the hard labor for them, so they hardly, if ever, went out into the sun. This caused their skin to become pale and sometimes semi-transparent, and this allowed some of their veins show through, especially in their hands. Now, blood, when not exposed to oxygen, is actually blue. And, if you're like me, you can trace most of your major veins on the top of your hand. And if you look closely, they're all blue. Hence, "blue-blood".
Well, that's it from me. Hope you enjoyed it.
Oh, and I've been playing Sims2 a bunch and a recently built a house that I'm pretty proud of. If I find time, I'll take some shots of the lot and of the interior and post them up here for you guys to check out.
